Flat plans
Flat plans
I have uploaded two ideas for my Magazine front cover. I made these flat plans on photoshop as it gave me an idea of how many layers i could be using for these covers.
In this flat plan I decided to have the main image only take up the right side of the cover, the purple blank space would be the same background as my main image.
Under the main image would be two other images. these images would be previews of a poster inside. I also made sure to include the conventions of a magazine; the bar code, masthead at the top, the date and price.
This is my second draft for the flat plan of my front cover.
As you can see the main image takes up the space of the whole cover to attract the readers eyes.
On top is a Masthead, this will indicate to the reader what genre of music magazine they are about to read.
The text around the main image will be features of whats inside the the magazine, if the main image has a color scheme then the text will have the same color as it.
This draft will also include all the conventions of a typical music magazine, such conventions like the bar code, price and date.
Instead of promotional posters on the front cover i swapped it with a quote from the artist, this is because i found that more pop magazines add a lot of posters and little goodies.
Mood board jazz
In this mood board I have included;
Three in-depth Jazz magazine front cover analysis
That covers the conventions of jazz magazines, what type of model they have used and why, the type of text they have used together and what technical techniques they have used (photoshop). I also explain what I will be using in my coursework and why.
Three In-depth Jazz magazine contents analysisThree In-depth Jazz magazine double feature spread.
First Mood Board- Looking into jazz
In this mood board I look at the conventions in jazz, this mood board is intended to inspire me for my magazine, giving me new ideas and such, I have explained in detailed on the colored sticky notes why i have included some photos in there. There are some heart stickers indicating which photos I like the best.

front page
||||||||||||||||||||
the text of the title looks a bit like Bernard MT Condensed in bold
the front cover has 3 different types of font
the colour of the text changes but its the same colour just lightened, the choice of colour is smart because the props they use are Orange
the people are over the main title,
the people in the main cover are all wearing the same clothes,
they all have the same pose, they are looking right into the camerae
full body shot
plan white background
lighting coming on the right
props used are not normally used, they look like Orange bags
this is important because you can really think out side the box
so when I'm taking photos I'll need to take it with alot of different things
price and bar code are there
only one little advertisement that kind of fits in with the cover but it stands out
self promotion is there alot.
CONTENSE PAGE

very interesting layout, they have a different person in the contense page, its a mid shot, the clothes he's wearing are very casual and cool, no props used, he's wearing a hat are a simple necklace accessory. the effects one this are very interesting, the picture is in black and white, the background in the middle is lighter then the surrounding, but text is where it is where its dark to it still catches your eye.
it uses the same colour scheme as the front cover, so it keeps thing the same.
notice how the page numbers don't go 1,2,3,4 but rather 1-6 7-12.
also the the feature page font is larger then then regular font, so for example it has a lot of sub headings and descriptions.
again 3 different fonts here, the text is kinda small here,
double feature page
||||||||||||||||||||
uses the photos from the same photo shop, uses 3 columns rule, two and then one as a paragraphs, the 2 different type of text, they included the text into the background,
it has different text size for the title making it look more interesting it also has different colours.
inside the fist paragraph a few of the words are put in bold, a larger text, and a different colour. This is important because when I'm writing my own feature I can have different things inside the text to make it stand out.
the picture has very odd poses, two people are leaning on each other, ones looking down at his feet and the other one is standing straight looking at the camera. the props used dont really have anything to do with jazz, they might have something to with the artists.
Mise-en-scene evaluation
Mise-en-scene evaluation
actors
The actors used in the magazine 'the reign' fits the genre of music they are portraying, the type of pose is quite different to the normal stereotypical glance to the camera, her body looks relaxed and it doesn't look forced, shes putting her arms behind her head, making a more defined outline of her body also it makes her face stand out. Although her eyes looked very relaxed the bubble gum in her mouth doesn't look natural, it feels awkward and ruins the relaxed vibe to it. The make up used on her looks very natural and not too flashy. The tie in her hair should of been a brighter colour or stand out more, this would bring out her face little more.
setting
The setting of this magazine is done very well as the colour is a creamy enforcing the relaxed feel, however looking at other hip hop magazines they are don't feel relaxed, they look very serious, the backgrounds normally used are plain to make the the actor stand out, in this one the background almost feels like its taking up the actors body. I don't like the refection behind her as it doesn't make sense why a shadow would be there, i feel like its a attempt to make her stand out but it just makes it look unfocused, if you follow down to the actors chest for some reason the reflection is light white, the shadows have been stretched making it look unrealistic.
costume
the type of clothing she is wearing looks very street which suits in very well for the genre of music as if you take a look at the other magazines they are not wearing expensive look clothes e.g suit and tie, they are normally is vest tops, i can connoted from this that, because hip hop normally consists of rap, most rap artists come from very urban background, so by dressing in this way it creates a connection with the reader. the colours of the jacket fits in with the 'smooth relax look' the knot made at the bottom gives it a street edge making her look more sexual, this is because her belly is exposed. the white top underneath goes well with the shade of blue, it all feels very safe to be honest, even thought it ticks boxes i feel the originality in the costume is not there. I have to remember for my own front cover i should make sure i hit the criteria but not be afraid to think out side the box. A feminist may say that the clothes she is wearing is objectifying her, by showing her belly and arms behind her head, making her hands not free to move around. in social interactions when someone shows the Palm of their hands allot it shows they are quite open and engaged, but because her hands are hidden but her body is showing towards us, which reinforces the objectifying take, makes a person think that its alright to think about woman in a sexual way with out consulting them.
lighting
their is not much lighting in this photo, the shadows are a give away sign that its been taken from the left upper corner if we go from the bubble gum but the shadow from the collar it looks like the light is shining on the right hand side, I think because of this it makes the shot look a little unprofessional, as in other hip hop magazine there is a clear lighting effect, i should remember this for my own magazine.
because its jazz i should make sure the lighting is low and not too defined, maybe even something like this would be quite nice.
the lighting used seems to be one
anything else we can see
The photos at the bottom really put off this magazine as the background is white, and then her top is white, she blends in and the lighting used is white as well making the reflection of her face white, i think its poorly done, the type of poses do look original and interesting.
