Mise-en-scene evaluation

Mise-en-scene evaluation
actors
The actors used in the magazine 'the reign' fits the genre of music they are portraying,  the type of pose is quite different to the normal stereotypical glance to the camera, her body looks relaxed and it doesn't look forced, shes putting her arms behind her head, making a more defined outline of her body also it makes her face stand out. Although her eyes looked very relaxed the bubble gum in her mouth doesn't look natural, it feels awkward and ruins the relaxed vibe to it. The make up used on her looks very natural  and not too flashy. The tie in her hair should of been a brighter colour or stand out more, this would bring out her face little more.

setting
The setting of this magazine is done very well as the colour is a creamy enforcing the relaxed feel, however looking at other hip hop magazines they are don't feel relaxed, they look very serious, the backgrounds normally used are plain to make the the actor stand out, in this one the background almost feels like its taking up the actors body. I don't like the refection behind her as it doesn't make sense why a shadow would be there, i feel like its a attempt to make her stand out but it just makes it look unfocused, if you follow down to the actors chest for some reason the reflection is light white, the shadows have been stretched making it look unrealistic.
costume
the type of clothing she is wearing looks very street which suits in very well for the genre of music  as if you take a look at the other magazines they are not wearing expensive look clothes e.g suit and tie, they are normally is vest tops, i can connoted from this that, because hip hop normally consists of rap, most rap artists come from very urban background, so by dressing in this way it creates a connection with the reader. the colours of the jacket fits in with the 'smooth relax look' the knot made at the bottom gives it a street edge making her look more sexual, this is because her belly is exposed. the white top underneath goes well with the shade of blue, it all feels very safe to be honest, even thought it ticks boxes i feel the originality in the costume is not there. I have to remember for my own front cover i should make sure i hit the criteria but not be afraid to think out side the box. A feminist may say that the clothes she is wearing is objectifying her, by showing her belly and arms behind her head, making her hands not free to move around. in social interactions when someone shows the Palm of their hands allot it shows they are quite open and engaged, but because her hands are hidden but her body is showing towards us, which reinforces the objectifying take, makes a person think that  its alright to think about woman in a sexual way with out  consulting them.

lighting
their is not much lighting in this photo, the shadows are a give away sign  that its been taken from the left upper corner if we go from the bubble gum but the shadow from the collar  it looks like the light is shining on the right hand side, I think because of this it makes the shot look a little unprofessional, as in other hip hop magazine there is a clear lighting effect, i should remember this for my own magazine.
because its jazz i should make sure the lighting is low and not too defined, maybe even something like this would be quite nice.

the lighting used seems to be one
anything else we can see
The photos at the bottom really put off this magazine as the background is white, and then her top is white, she blends in and the lighting used is white as well making the reflection of her face white, i think its poorly done, the type of poses do look original and interesting.

  1. You break your evaluation down clearly onto key elements fo the mise-en-scene suach as actors and setting.

Target: be spectific and explanatory in your evaluation. for example, not comment that actors pose is stereotypical: how? What stereotype is being presented here?
