In this mood board I have included;

Three in-depth Jazz magazine front cover analysis

That covers the conventions of jazz magazines, what type of model they have used and why, the type of text they have used together and what technical techniques they have used  (photoshop). I also explain what I will be using in my coursework and why.

First Mood Board- Looking into jazz

In this mood board I look at the conventions in jazz, this mood board is intended to inspire me for my magazine, giving me new ideas and such, I have explained in detailed on the colored sticky notes why i have included some photos in there. There are some heart stickers indicating which photos I like the best.

Mise-en-scene evaluation

Mise-en-scene evaluation
actors
The actors used in the magazine 'the reign' fits the genre of music they are portraying,  the type of pose is quite different to the normal stereotypical glance to the camera, her body looks relaxed and it doesn't look forced, shes putting her arms behind her head, making a more defined outline of her body also it makes her face stand out. Although her eyes looked very relaxed the bubble gum in her mouth doesn't look natural, it feels awkward and ruins the relaxed vibe to it. The make up used on her looks very natural  and not too flashy. The tie in her hair should of been a brighter colour or stand out more, this would bring out her face little more.

setting
The setting of this magazine is done very well as the colour is a creamy enforcing the relaxed feel, however looking at other hip hop magazines they are don't feel relaxed, they look very serious, the backgrounds normally used are plain to make the the actor stand out, in this one the background almost feels like its taking up the actors body. I don't like the refection behind her as it doesn't make sense why a shadow would be there, i feel like its a attempt to make her stand out but it just makes it look unfocused, if you follow down to the actors chest for some reason the reflection is light white, the shadows have been stretched making it look unrealistic.
costume
the type of clothing she is wearing looks very street which suits in very well for the genre of music  as if you take a look at the other magazines they are not wearing expensive look clothes e.g suit and tie, they are normally is vest tops, i can connoted from this that, because hip hop normally consists of rap, most rap artists come from very urban background, so by dressing in this way it creates a connection with the reader. the colours of the jacket fits in with the 'smooth relax look' the knot made at the bottom gives it a street edge making her look more sexual, this is because her belly is exposed. the white top underneath goes well with the shade of blue, it all feels very safe to be honest, even thought it ticks boxes i feel the originality in the costume is not there. I have to remember for my own front cover i should make sure i hit the criteria but not be afraid to think out side the box. A feminist may say that the clothes she is wearing is objectifying her, by showing her belly and arms behind her head, making her hands not free to move around. in social interactions when someone shows the Palm of their hands allot it shows they are quite open and engaged, but because her hands are hidden but her body is showing towards us, which reinforces the objectifying take, makes a person think that  its alright to think about woman in a sexual way with out  consulting them.

lighting
their is not much lighting in this photo, the shadows are a give away sign  that its been taken from the left upper corner if we go from the bubble gum but the shadow from the collar  it looks like the light is shining on the right hand side, I think because of this it makes the shot look a little unprofessional, as in other hip hop magazine there is a clear lighting effect, i should remember this for my own magazine.
because its jazz i should make sure the lighting is low and not too defined, maybe even something like this would be quite nice.

the lighting used seems to be one
anything else we can see
The photos at the bottom really put off this magazine as the background is white, and then her top is white, she blends in and the lighting used is white as well making the reflection of her face white, i think its poorly done, the type of poses do look original and interesting.

Jazz magazine research and front cover analysis

The camera shot used for this magazine is a close up shot, we can see his face and half of his chest, his arms and hands are also in the shot.
In the image we can see that he's posing in a particular way, his fingers are spread out  palms faced towards him self, and he is closing his eyes tightly whiles his mouth is open. At fist glance it would look like if hes in some type of pain. the pose he is doing is very bold and out of the ordinary, this would defiantly catch peoples attention because normally in front covers the model makes direct eye contact and the body language would be more directed at the viewer whiles in this one he faces more in towards him self.

This is extremely important to note down for my own music magazine as this gives me an idea, I don't have to stick with the ordinary poses ( e.g http://media.guildford.ac.uk/users/10021420/weblog/63f35/images/1725b.jpeg ) as going for something more out of the ordinary may attract people. it also gives it personality.

The colours used in this are mostly black while and light brown. I have almost noticed that there is a tint to the the model, a vintage tint, with this in mind to keep a vintage tint things need to age over a certain time, this could suggest that the target audience is more mature, I would say 25+

He's wearing very basic clothes, black top and a hat, the hat is very 'old school'  you would normally see older people wear it, he is unshaved and his nails are cut oddly, making the atmosphere relaxed, the feel to the magazine is very calming, hes not scruffy in a bad way where it looks like he did not bother, but hes not over done making him feel more believable and real, like you could see him walk down the street.

All the visuals link up very nicely to the music genera jazz and blues, as jazz it very relaxing, smooth, jazz is also a quite old music genera.

The magazine did a good job with a minimalist look, as it added the right amount of content and spaced everything out evenly. However some people may say there is too much blank space that could be used, furthermore I don't particularly like the blocky front used at the very bottom of the front cover. It seems very out of place with the rest of the magazine as everything else uses a thinner font text and placed in small paragraphs.

Survey Monkey Music magazine research feedback

After waiting for about a week, thanks to survey monkey its tallied up my results which you can see down be low

In the first question overall 73.68% of people who filled out this questionnaire were female, this gives me an idea that my target audience is will be more feminine then masculine, by knowing this it will  change a few aspects of my final magazine cover, for example on the front cover if I was to include a female model on the front cover I would want to dress them more appropriately, making them look more classy then sexual, furthermore I would avoid thick chunky text style as this is more associated on males magazines. However there will still be a male audience that will be interested in this, so I have to make sure I don’t lean to far into the stereotype of females, by this I mean I should avoid making things too pink, and too ‘cute’ instead I should go will more asexual colours like grey, black, white.

The majority of the people who have answered my survey were aged 16-20 which is 84.21% of my overall results I got back., Because of this I don’t have to restrict myself on age rating for example, if the majority of the people who filled out the survey were under 16 I would have to make sure nothing is too graphic e.g. no nudity violent or inappropriate images furthermore I would have to look into more recent jazz artists, but because the target audience is more mature they’re more likely to know older jazz artists. I could also make those references in the final make of my magazine

The trending answer seems to be people are in school/collage, it would make sense because most of the people that have filled this out were aged 16-20. Because of this I have to keep in mind that people normally in collage/school tent to be more applied to the latest trends, some thing more monden. Because of this I have to make sure what my model for my images are wearing clothes that are considered in fashion now.

This question determines the type of language i will be using through out the magazine, for example the majority of people who answered  this question barely read magazines, and from the last question they are still in school. This would suggest to me that the language i should use should be shorter, less complex words that the typical 16-25 would know. this is very important for my double page spread when i write out the feature.

In this question the majority of people voted for the cheapest option which i am not surprised at all, one.  the most of the people to answered this would be in school/collage making it hard for them to acquire money. This will help me price my magazine appropriately.

The majority of people answered that

I’m very pleased with the amount of responses I got, I thought for one of my questions everyone one would want a large photo spread across but in fact they would rather have several images spread around with text by it which was very interesting to see.In the first question it seems like more girls answered this survey then boys

This is my survey for my Music magazine research, I used survey monkey to create it, I found it easy to use but it was frustrating only having 9 questions for free as I wanted to ask a lot more different questions, how every I thought that overall it was a lot more simpler to do then to write it all out on word then calculate the results by using Exel,

Media music magazine cover analysis from LaylaMed

In activity two we had to research a front cover of a magazine, I talked about the mastheads, subheading, font size and colour and who would most likely want to buy it, I also talked about the main image, the way the model looks at the photo, the colours been used and the makeup she wears. I also talked about the small quotes on the side of the magazine; I went into detail on how this played a major factor in the target audience

Media work from LaylaMed
The first Activity we had been told to do analysis on a music video or a poster, I decided to do a detailed analysis on the poster, I talked about the background of the company and then I talked about what was actually on the poster, so the model, the dogs in the back ground and the lighting. In the last slide I started to question if they was morally right to show off woman like that and question who else would have a major issues with this.
